Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Vol 12 coming out in March!

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Vol 12 cover (story by Yūma Midori, art by Laruha)

My dear readers, I owe you a lot of apologies. I’ve been delayed yet again in fan-translating Vol 7 Ch 4, primarily due to some professional deadlines. However, I’ve also promised a friend back in late 2020 that I would sew her a dress, but I haven’t been able to finish that dress. Thus, when I was fan-translating the Kakuriyo chapters, I have been having this guilty feeling of not keeping my promise to my friend :-/ thus… I have been dedicating time to finish that dress asap. Gomen ne…

However, it seems it's time to dust off my Kakuriyo novels & finish fan-translating that Vol 7 Ch 4 that has been delayed...because we're going to have Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Vol 12 coming! It's a collection of short stories of Aoi's life in Kakuriyo with her husband Ōdanna-sama! ^_^

I will buy Vol 12 and see what they have there and report back to you at least the chapter titles…

As for Vol 7 Ch 4, please wait for another month? I know I’m selfish asking you to wait for more… but I hope I will be blessed with more wit and quick grasps of the chapter this time, hence I can keep my overdue promise…

Anyway, here’s the summary of Vol 12 of the novel for you all, taken from the Kadokawa website. Thank you and, as always, take care…

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Vol 12: The Memoirs of a Bed and Breakfast for the Spirits

Aoi, who has been living in Kakuriyo, has returned. This is the story of her casual days with her ayakashi friends.

Upon marrying into a bed and breakfast for the spirits called Tenjin-ya, Aoi has been working as the apprentice for the Great Proprietess. She has been consulted by fellow ayakashi who are studying abroad in Utsushiyo. As the cultural exchange between Kakuriyo and Utsushiyo increases, so are the troubles that come with it. Looking back on her experience, Aoi writes up letters containing tips on how humans and ayakashi can live together. Thereupon, Ōdanna also joined in, thus flowers bloom in the old tale…

Then, there is also a behind-the-scene story of the day Aoi decided to live in Kakuriyo, the thoughts and emotions of Ōdanna who founded Tenjin-ya, and the previously unknown great adventure of Chibi’s. This is the memoir of mundane days that Aoi spend together with her ayakashi friends.

Yay! I can’t for you to translate Volume 12. It’s sad that we won’t seem to have Season 2 of the anime. But still, this will be more than enough. Take as much time as you need, we will be waiting patiently. As always, take care and God Bless. :)

Anon, Спасибо, spasibo, thanks a lot!

Kikaykim, somehow I feel that we will get Season 2 eventually. Last week, IIRC, I was liking a tweet from a Gonzo producer, and quoted that tweet. The producer then liked my tweet. If s/he saw my other tweets, s/he might then realise there were quote a lot of non-Japanese fans of Kakuriyo's waiting for Season 2. Anyway, don't give up. We will get Season 2 one day...

And I will definitely buy Vol 12. Btw, there is a set of Volumes 1-11 now on 50% sale on eBay, hence anyone who wants to buy this set should get it. It's a very very good price! I paid the original price listed here, and I don't regret it, because then I was able to translate some chapters. However, for collectors, this one is a treat!

I wasn't expecting another volume and I've got so happy because of it!
Maybe now the second season may appear, cuz the story will be complete. Also, this vol 12 really smells like an OVA or a 'bonus', a treat to the fans.

Hi CatLady, sorry for the late reply. I was finishing the dress for my friend when your comment arrived hence couldn't reply quicker (but good news: the dress is DONE! So I can go back to Tenjin-ya crew now!).

Yeah I am very happy too! It would be nice to have it as a bonus or so for Vol 12...

I think Yuma Midori sensei loves Kakuriyo so much, because she dedicates two gaiden volumes (11-12) for this story. I'd love to read Setsu and Aoi interacting with Shutendoji and Ibaraki in the other story too (the Asakusa Bride's Diary)...

Hello! Thank you for all the translations, I've been itching to read the continuation of the anime since 2020 and I'm delighted that I found this blog. Looking forward for the Volume 9 chapter 3 continuation.

Thank you, Anon! Glad you've found this blog!

It will be a while before I can translate Vol 9 Ch 3, but I hope you like the general direction of the story...

Take care!

Hahaha! Thanks for the comment, Sky!

Oh no, I haven't given up on this blog yet! Just been having deadlines until the first week of May, and then some statistics workshops that are not my forte. I have been eye-ing on the novel, hoping I can pick it up this weekend... (or sooner).

The good news is that I have bought Vol 12 novel and Vol 8 manga from Japan. It will take time to arrive, but I'm not in a hurry anyway. Fingers crossed I'm in a good position to dust off the novel for Vol 7 Ch 4 this weekend. I am bad at keeping promises these days... but Aoi and Setsu are still my favourite!

I just finished with the anime, and I've gone through your entire blog! Lol. The translations and explanations of some of the plot points have been great. Am hoping for a season 2 to finish everything off.

Nonetheless, I'm a bit confused on Setsu basically giving his "life force" (essence of his psychic power, as translated) and diminished life span thereafter.

Was it ever expressed in detail what gives the ayakashi their longevity? Does it vary by creature? Is it because they are yokai? Or does it have to do with the amount of spiritual power? How long can they even live in general?

If it is by spiritual power, how powerful is Setsu? If he is that powerful, what would shortening his life span mean? I'm trying to gauge how much was cut by him saving Aoi from her curse (and how big of a deal it was) or if any character knowledgeable enough was able to express it in the novel. If he gave that (his life) up, why is he still alive and still so strong?

Unless it was partially his essence and not the entire thing. If that's the case, what does he have a left? A few centuries?

Sorry if it's a lot of questions, but I'm trying to fully understand this part.

hi Jeanna,

Sorry for the late reply and no worries about long questions (I like them, actually!).

From my reading, it seems the "essence" is the metaphysical heart that gives the ayakashi their longevity. The time span might vary by species/creature, but in general, it would extend their longevity much more than humans. The Northwestern Land director (a tanuki) commented as much in vol 9 ch 1 that a tanuki's lifespan is different than that of an oni, and Ōdanna-sama dismissed it jokingly (because his lifespan was already shaved off by then).

Setsu is one of the most powerful yokai in Kakuriyo, but giving up his essence means that he has considerably shaved off his lifespan. In my summary of Vol 10, I explained (by way of Setsu explaining himself) that he only has 100 years to live.

In vol 9 ch 7 (p240), Ōgondōji-sama also explained to Aoi that Setsu only has about 100 years to live now (Aoi of course beat herself up for it).

Setsu will basically die around the same time Aoi dies (Aoi's life is prolonged because of Setsu, and also because she's been living in Kakuriyo and eating Kakuriyo food). But in vol 10 (in my summary, not yet translated), Setsu admits that he prefers that way, rather than living a long life without Aoi...

"why is he still alive and still so strong?

Unless it was partially his essence and not the entire thing."

I forgot about this question. It's the entire thing; his entire psychic essence. The reason he's still alive and strong is because Ōgondōji-sama inserted an artificial psychic essence into Setsu once Setsu's essence was taken out. This artificial essence helped Setsu remaining strong etc. Eating Aoi's food (which basically is imbued with Aoi's power - or rather, Setsu's own power that he has given to Aoi) also adds to his vitality and lifetime.

I don't know whether before the "surgical" removal of the essence Setsu was stronger than he is now, but if his strength is not much diminished, it's a testament to Ōgondōji-sama's power and perhaps Setsu's own willpower to keep living. The first meal that he had from Aoi was basically about 15 years after his essence was removed, i.e. when Aoi gave him her bento outside a temple in the first chapter/episode of the anime. And since then, Aoi only gave him meals sparingly (I think the next one was an onigiri), until she realised how much Setsu loves bento in general.
