Season Two Ep 6 review

S2E6 is out and it’s packed! I slept early and was able to woke up at 4 am AEST without an alarm so that I could watch it. And I love the episode! The animation was generally well done (except for one scene where Aoi's emon was incorrectly drawn again), and it feels more like Season One in the feeling now.

Since my day is also packed today, I’m writing my review here now.

First and foremost, we hear the word “jyaki” for the first time, so the cat (or jyaki) is out of the bag now! interestingly, the translators used the word “ogre-devil” for that. I don’t dislike it, and I actually do admire that word choice. However,  I never use the word “ogre” to translate “oni” anyway, so I will stick with jyaki. It’s a bit weird as well, like translating “onigiri” to “rice cake” or “sushi” to… rolled rice or something else. We also see a revelation from Ginji at dawn, though it departs rather markedly from his own narrative in the novel. There are also some creative licence in scene interpretations from the novel, but I was also surprised that some scenes that I thought would be skipped were actually retained.

Anyway, let’s start chronologically.

The story picked up from Ep 5 ending where that bastard Raijū (who was slightly better animated than his S2E3 look) appeared at the Yōto Cemetery to hassle Aoi again. Aoi fought back, but of course she was physically too weak for the powerful ayakashi. There was also a moment when Raijū said to Aoi that she couldn't do anything this time, because she could only cook, and it hit Aoi hard per Vol 7 Ch 4. Raijū was about to shove Aoi to the Silver Pidgeon Squad (who appeared out of thin air) when, as per Vol 7 Ch 4, Byakuya and Sasuke-ku arrived to rescue the girl. Per the novel, Sasuke-kun also used his kunai (the short ninja blade) to subdue Raijū.

Then Byakuya teleported (well, spirited-away) himself, Aoi and Sasuke-kun to the Silhouette, Shimon’s clock shop at the Yōto underground Ochukubo District. After a short introduction to Shimon (who is Dr Saraku’s older brother), Byakuya narrated Ōdanna-sama’s history.

I love Shimon's jacket sleeve, btw. It reminds me of an Ainu pattern

Two surprises here for me: first, they actually had the conversation over a dark-coloured drink. I wish Shimon would say that the drink was dandelion coffee and we could see Sasuke-kun trying so hard to drink that thing, haha! (btw, I tried dandelion coffee the last time I was in Tokyo and I actually liked it!). The second – very – surprising thing is that Byakuya narrated the story of Ōdanna-sama in front of Sasuke-kun and Shimon-san. In the novel, Byakuya told the story just in front of Aoi. Shimon might have known the story because he didn’t look surprised there. However, later when Sasuke and Aoi walked the underground towards the exit, Sasuke-kun looked pensive (but I don't think he detested Ōdanna-sama afterwards).

Anyway, so now we know several very important thing: that Ōdanna-sama is a jyaki, and hence he was imprisoned recently by the King because of the bad history between the jyaki and other ayakashi species in the past. Aoi remembered her only encounter with a(nother) jyaki in S1E20. Here we get a nice flashback of Ōdanna-sama fighting off the jyaki who almost ate Aoi in S1E20 (screen shot TBA, but here's the S1 scene for now).

Yet, the first time Ōdanna-sama was imprisoned (sealed away) was actually hundreds of years ago under a castle called “Tenjin-jō” or the Tenjin Castle. Ōgondōji-sama lived in the Castle back then (I didn’t know that! It wasn’t in the chapters I’ve translated), and one day about 500 years ago, she was able to release Ōdanna-sama. It might have been that Ōgondōji-sama purposely lived in the Castle to find out how to break the seal. Shortly after, Byakuya met the young Ōdanna-sama and the former advisor of the King then joined Tenjin-ya as one of its founding members.

Byakuya also mentioned that Saraku was roped into the gang but didn’t hint of the presence of the fourth founding member (i.e., Zakuro). I think it’s purposely kept for Ep 7 for Hatori to tell per Vol 7 Ch 6.

By the way, regarding the timeline of Ōdanna-sama’s first imprisonment: based on Vol 9 Ch 1, Ōdanna-sama actually had been around during the Heian era (about 1,000 years ago), but his parents whisked him away to our world due to the Great Ayakashi War (I made up the name of the war btw). Ōdanna-sama then decided to return to Kakuriyo (possibly with Sutendōji, the other setsuki who now lives in Asakusa Tokyo). In Kakuriyo, Ōdanna-sama was captured for being a jyaki (while Sutendōji must have escaped), and thus the Master was imprisoned, sealed away, underneath the Tenjin Castle. Since Setsu was freed not long after after the Muromachi-era Suzume died, he must have been sealed for about 500 years before Ōgondōji-sama rescued him. That's five hundred years in the darkness in hunger...

(Edit 23 Nov'25: I just realised that in Vol 9 Ch 7, Ōgondōji-sama did say that Ōdanna-sama was sealed for the first time for 500 years before she rescued him...Glad that my math was correct!)

Also, this is where Aoi realised that she was not the only one abandoned and left to die of hunger. Ōdanna-sama also suffered a similar, if not crueller fate. Here we have the flashback of child Aoi and child Ōdanna-sama got imprisoned, curling up in hunger…

I thought about it the other day, that the scene must have been in Aoi’s mind because Ōdanna-sama was depicted as a normal oni (i.e,. human-like, just with a pair of horns). Turned out, I was right…

Then, per Vol 7 Ch 4, Byakuya asked Aoi to stay with Ōdanna-sama as an ally (“nakama”) even though she might see him in his true form. As per the novel, Aoi hesitated, or at least she didn’t say anything. Byakuya then realised that he couldn’t force her to give her words on that.

Afterwards, Byakuya left the Silhouette while Shimon took Aoi and Sasuke-kun to another underground exit, through the underground wasabi field that Shimon’s wife is taking care of. Shimon also gave a basketful of fresh vegetables (including fresh wasabi) to Aoi and Sasuke.

(fresh wasabi is actually quite nice! I think we need to eat it over Japanese rice made, preferably made with Japanese water though, for the flavour to really come out. I’ve made Japanese rice with the Japanese donabe – clay pot – many times in Australia. Yet, although the rice is delicious, it cannot surpass Japanese rice I’ve eaten in Japan. I guess water in Japan is different, after all…)

Then Aoi and Sasuke-kun went back to Tenjin-ya, for Aoi had to prepare for another Nighthawk cruising dinner. Onboard of the airship, Aoi realised that if she can find another door to open with her Obsidian Key, she might be able to find Ōdanna-sama. Another important thing that she realised is that her camellia hairpin has bloomed. We then got a nice flashback of when Ōdanna-sama put the hairpin on her chignon for the first time during their first Yōto trip. I still miss the S1 visuals of Ōdanna-sama back then… but at least this scene was also properly animated.

Upon returning to Tenjin-ya, Aoi was greeted by Ginji and Ai-chan, but Chibi was nowhere to be found. Since Ginji said that he saw Chibi just now (around the bamboo groves, Aoi and Ginji went to find the kappa). They found the kappa alright, but there was no mention that Chibi actually ran away because he thought Aoi was abandoning him (per Vol 7 Ch 5). There was also a missed opportunity here, because in the novel, while walking towards the bamboo groves, Aoi actually asked Ginji if he knew about Ōdanna-sama being a jyaki. Ginji confirmed it, and that he knew about it because the Master himself told the Nine-tailed Fox about it.

Come to think of it… the reason why the other – currently unnamed – founding member left Tenjin-ya might be because Ōdanna-sama told her about his real identity, and she snapped and left in a scurry of anger. The very reason for Ōdanna-sama to inform his closest circle is because he didn’t want to deceive them. It backfired once, thus I think A Sprinkle of Anime is correct in deducing that Ōdanna-sama didn’t want to tell Aoi about his secret identity because another ayakashi once left him because of that. However, I think Ōdanna-sama also thus once again realised how much hatred the general ayakashi folk has for jyaki in general, hence he didn’t tell Aoi about his secret…

Anyway, upon locating the runaway Chibi, Aoi and Ginji brought him back to the Moonflower, where they started making temari-zushi.

They then distributed the temari-zushi to all Tenjin-ya staff.

Later, Aoi and Ginji had wasabi donburi (gimme that! I’ll add a heap of myoga ginger!), when Ginji blurted out how every time he goes home, seeing Aoi’s smile and eating her food, he always felt better. Then Ginji turned beet-red and suddenly collapsed on the table, exhausted.

A few hours later, Ginji woke up to find himself sleeping on the counter of the Moonflower. A few seats away, Aoi was sleeping as well on the counter. Her hair was undone, and she was holding the camellia hairpin. She also uttered Ōdanna-sama’s name in her sleep. Ginji carried her to her room and left.

Outside the Moonflower, Ginji saw the dawn sky and recalled what his brother Ranmaru said to him in Vol 5 Epilogue. Being the observant (although foul-mouthed) brother, Ranmaru saw that Ginji loved Aoi. He warned his younger brother of the pain brought by loving a girl whose heart is for someone else.

This is where it departs from the novel. In Vol 7 Intermezzo 1, Ginji was just pondering about his unrequited love to Aoi. There was no resolution there. Here in S2E6, he has arrived at the resolution that he would keep loving her and supporting her so that she smiles again.

I don’t know which version I like better. I guess, due to the lightning speed of S2, Ginji has to made the commitment now for the story to move forward…  One thing is for sure, although I am in love with my Setsu-Aoi pair, I do feel Ginji’s pain. He’s such a lovely kitsune…

Anyway, another thing is for certain: the animation is getting better now, and I hope it stays that way. I think Ep 4 and Ep 5 have the same animation quality. I need to check the end credit titles to see if there are changes in the team. I know "New Animate Studio" is still in charge, but maybe the bad animators are assigned to colouring trees now... though the bamboo grove background was actually lovely; its perspective changed as Aoi and Ginji walked by. I also appreciate the short shamisen tone when Byakuya and Sasuke-kun rescued Aoi.

Episode 7 next week will be another packed episode where Aoi infiltrates the Imperial Palace to give macaroons to a certain young prince (and Byakuya tagging along to give the King an overdue lecture). However, first, I think she will meet Hatori onboard the Nighthawk, where Hatori tells her of the presence of a certain someone who was rumoured to be Ōdanna-sama’s girlfriend in the past. Can't wait to see Aoi getting jealous!

Edit 8 Nov’25:

Since we’re at midpoint of the series, we should have the second OP and ED soon. Perhaps in Ep 7 or Ep 8? Based on Tōyama Nao's music in iMusic, if I am correct, the OP2 title would be "Utagoe wo Mejirushini" (“The Goal of My Singing Voice”), while the ED2 might be "Souiukanji no kaime"...(“The Kind of Feeling I Get”)...The other OST is “Hitosaji no Hikari” (A Spoonful of Light). In S2E2, Konishi Katsuyuki sang A Spoonful of Light, while in S2E3, he sang it as well, overlapping with Tōyama Nao's ED Recipe for Tears (Namida no Reshipi).

Only now I truly understand what it means. The recipe for tears is a spoonful of light. It’s truly beautiful…

Btw, I haven’t truly understoond what the first OP “Tōryanse” means, but it seems Tōryanse 通りゃんせ is based on an old Edo Period song where it also features Tenjin-sama (the Deity of Knowledge). It’s also seen as a song describing checkpoints which are easy to get through but difficult to return from. It’s like… a point of no return? Somehow it befits the current situation where the Tenjin-ya folks are going through.

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for creating this blog and translating the light novels. I discovered it 15 days ago and I'm so happy to be able to follow the story. I discovered Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi at the beginning of this year (when I started getting Crunchyroll) and I loved the story. When I saw it, I looked for where I could read the continuation and couldn't find anything, but I imagined the story continued. In September, I found out about the second season and I was so happy. It's a shame that here in Spain we can't enjoy the manga or the light novels. Thank you so much for bringing the story to us. I loved today's chapter, but I felt really bad for Ginji at the end, even though I had a feeling he was in love with Aoi since the first season. 😊

Hi Anon, thanks a lot for the visits and the comment! Glad you found this blog! Yeah, I think it’s quite obvious that Ginji has been in love with Aoi since S1… and I do feel for him… however, his decision to support Aoi is very admirable. IIRC, in early novel Vol 10, I think Ginji finally arrived at this resolution (or maybe in Vol 8, I have to check, because there is a short intermezzo chapter about his conversation with Ranmaru). Btw, how did you end up finding this blog? You mentioned it was quite hard to find the continuation of the story.

Also re: translation, the Ioka version of the manga is now published in Polish, so you can request as well for Spanish to Kadokawa! The Ioka manga is closer to the novel in its details, hence you will find more nuances there.

Thanks again!

hahaha!! IKR! Slaaaay!!!

We still need to wait for at least 2 episodes though before our darling oni appears! The good thing about this being so fast is that we will see him again soon, but we will also have the series wrapped up soon, cos we're halfway already!

dang!! I know these next 3 weeks will fly by for me coz imma be so busy with work, but dang its still a while away T_T

Also I probably read this somewhere but does anyone else think the hairpin symbolizes Aoi's love growing for Odanna-sama? I'm sure its a metaphor but what if it actually grows due to that?

Coz he was surprised when he saw it when they reunite, not sure if its just coz the time to pay the debt is running out or if it had some secret meaning only he knew about ykkkkkk....
Icha said…
Yes, I think the hairpin magically responds to Aoi's growing love to Ōdanna-sama. I think our dear oni joked back then when he said that the camellia petals will fall one day, and that's the day Aoi has to pay her grandpa's debt. Like, the Beast' red rose, haha! But no, I think the hairpin grows in response to Aoi's growing love to Ōdanna-sama. That's why in Vol 6 Ch 9 and Vol 9 Ch 1 Ōdanna-sama silently observed the hairpin (but he said nothing). He noticed the hairpin has blossomed.

Re: work, OMG, tell me about it! I'm so busy with work but I wanted to post the review, so somehow my body woke up at 4 am today! Now I'm paying the price... so sleepy, but still have some things to do before I clock out...

Yeahhh that is so well thought-out by our dear author!!

I know its so tiring to wake up that early but there's also something super peaceful about it haha, everything is just so... quiet :0

Thanks for the great ep. 6 summary! Agree that animation quality is much better, thank goodness - just loved the look of adorable young Ōdanna-sama and the mirror image scene with young Aoi. Voice actor Satosho Hino did a great job capturing the essence of the evil, menacing Raijū. You'd never know he also does the voice of Demon Slayer's beloved Kyojuro Rengoku! The end of the episode showing poor lovelorn Ginji was moving. We know he's destined to be friend-zoned by Aoi, but I still feel for him!

I loved this episode. The animation was better. Raiju looked like his old self instead of how badly they portrayed him in episode 5. I loved seeing Byakuya and Sasuke rescue Aoi. Anything that backfires on Raiju is a good thing. I didn't mind them skipping over Chibi running away. There was alot in this episode and it seemed to run a little longer than the other ones. That might just have been the timing of the episode though. I did not check the run times of the other episodes.

The ending was sad but beautifully done from when Ginji wakes up and is embarrassed to the end. He was Aoi's first friend at Tenjin ya and now seems resolved to keep supporting her that way even though his heart is breaking. I teared up at the Ranmaru scene even though I want Aoi and Odanna to end up together.

Icha thanks again for the recaps and the blog. Take care of yourself and don't over do it.

It's Terri again Icha. I know you like the Shamisen too ther's quite a bit of it in the first 4:45 of the episode. First with Aoi and Raiju while he's menacing her and again when Byakuya is menacing Raiju. I live the Shamisen. I listen for it too. I'm a Yoshids Brothers fan.

Hahaha, yeah, I think I'm okay waking up at 6 am (or even 5:30 am), but 4 am is a bit pushing for me. But that's okay, I slept a lot last night and am feeling much better now. I do agree that Yuma Midori thinks through her stories very well! She's also very creative in her writing. I have only read Kakuriyo and the Tainted Bride (the Ayakashi Hunter's Tainted Bride or something), but I love her writing! Thanks again, Kiriaki!

Hi Anon, thank you for the comment! OMG, IDK that the VA for Kyojuro is also doing Raiju! OMG that's amazing! And yeah... friend-zoned Ginji is hard to see, but I do admire him so much for his immense love and friendship for Aoi. We all need a Ginji in our life!
Icha said…
Hi again Terri! I agree that Raiju looks more like his S1 self than the S2 Ep 5 animation. Good on that front, though I do love it when he gets kicked around by Byakuya, hahaha! I forgot to add that the Ranmaru conversation was from Vol 5 last chapters... (I said that in the translation, but not in the review). I will add it for more info later. And thank you very much for the visits, Terri! I slept well last night and I am feeling much better now.

OMG, you're a fan of Yoshida Brothers??? Me too!!! What do you think of Mashiro no Oto then? I actually went to that area where Setsu (the Mashiro Setsu) came from once and I tried a shamisen there. Quite fun!

Yooo this was a cool episode. Animation is getting better. Glad that the plot is thickening. Also I feel for Ginji. It's okay Ginji, the fans love you haha... you'll get another human girl/ayakashi to love and who loves you back one day? He's such a good friend to Aoi it's so nice to see his love for her without any ulterior motives :")
Aoi learning about her future husband more and clearly loving him more too. Odanna-sama has a solid group of friends. Thanks for the review!
Icha said…
Yooo Oni-fan! Glad you also think Ep 6 is cool! Yeah, I am going to re-watch it later this afternoon (been too busy the last two days), and I'm going to enjoy it without the need to write a review about it, haha!

I hope we'll going to have a new OP in Ep 7, cos it's past midpoint of the series now. Based on Tōyama Nao's music in iMusic, if I am correct, the OP2 title would be "Utagoe wo Mejirushini" (the Goal of My Singing Voice), while the ED2 might be "Souiukanji no kaime"...(The Kind of Feeling I Get)...
Oni-fan said…
Right, I totally get that haha... unwinding and enjoying something without doing anything about it :)
Oooo it'll be nice to hear the other songs too! But if you want to share, feel free to!

Anyways, in other news, did you see the news about golden kpop demon hunters being nominated for grammys? That's really nice for the girls. I wonder if they're going to win an award or not?
Icha said…
Oni-fan, yo! I've listened to the other two songs, and I like them. I still miss S1 Cour 2 OP (with a lot of Japanese instruments like shamisen and shakuhachi), but S2 songs are nice too.

Oh, I don't follow the Demon Hunters, but congrats to them!!! Hope they win an award!
Oni-fan said…
Yeah I loved both of the OP for S1! S1 Cour 2 OP sounded so cool 😎 Great vocals honestly, we were fed well in S1 so I appreciate that :) I thought Nao's kimonos were really pretty (in the MVs) though I love the purple one more💜💚
