Vol 5 Chapters

Below is the list of chapters for the Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi novel Volume 5, which is also the last volume which has been depicted in the anime. I translated only one of them (Intermission 2 about Raijū vs Ōdanna), while the other two translated chapters were by Cherry Lining (which was translated from a Mandarin source).

For Volumes 3 and 4 fan-translations, please check and support Rolypolyredbeanbun's Wordpress site here.

Volume  5: あやかしお宿に美味い肴あります

Delicious tapas^ are served at the Inn for the Spirits

(I translated 肴 ‘sakana’ as ‘tapas’ because it actually means snacks served with alcoholic drinks in Japanese bars. To me, it is similar to tapas, hence my choice of translation)

Now this is interesting. Hourai seems to be the Japanese equivalent of Prestor John's kingdom, and the wikipedia entry for it shows a hanging scroll very similar to what Byakuya opens. There is also mention of "a jewelled branch from Hourai" as one of the tasks that Princess Kaguya set for one of the princes that came to ask for her hand in marriage.

I wonder where Ranmaru learned to be a potty mouth.

Hi PerthOni, thanks for the comment! Oooh! I remember now that Kaguya-hime monogatari scene about the jewelled branch! Oooh, nice catch about the Hourai Scroll! I just looked at it, and yes, it's definitely like the scroll Byakuya opened!

Also, hahaha, Ranmaru was actually a darling little puppy when Princess Iso was still alive. He changed when she died, switching personality with Ginji. Ginji was a rascal back then, right, but then after the Princess died, he was the one who was more considerate. I guess, Ranmaru's potty mouth is there to protect his heart break...

When I pass my exams I am so asking for a jewelled branch from Hourai from my hubs!

And I suppose you can't really live for over 300 years, see your adoptive mother sacrifice herself because of betrayal and not learn several words of uhm, self-expression.

Interesting what adversity does to someone. Makes me wonder if there are psychologists in kakuriyo.

Hahaha! You will pass your exams! However, hubby will not be able to get a Hourai jewelled branch for you, unfortunately! He can get the imitation though, with precious stones, but not that one!

Yeah, I feel sorry for Ranmaru after knowing his back story. I also think that, after he became a grown-up ayakashi, he actually fell in love with the memory of Princess Iso. There is a chapter in Vol 5 where he had a monologue and basically said that no one can replace Princess Iso in his heart. He will forever be a perennial bachelor...
