Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi Season 2 First Trailer!

Just a short article to comment on the first trailer of S2 Kakuriyo. I was wondering for a while when the first trailer is going to be dropped, cos S2 kicks off next week on 1 Oct. And finally, on Monday, Gonzo dropped the first trailer – almost belatedly IMO. This is my first impressions of watching it, as well as some notes about the scenes I am seeing from the trailer.

First… well, I prefer Ōdanna-sama’s S1 form. He somehow looked more majestic in S1 than the S2 snippets that I have seen so far… though yes I agree that S1 pan-out scenes are not great (there are times where Ōdanna-sama looked weird, and he should be majestic instead!). Ginji is also not as cool as his S1 form… and I am missing his S1 form already.

I also prefer the S1 magenta camellia hairpin. It looks more like a crystal instead of a flower, whereas S2 hairpin looks more like a flower perching on top of the hairpin. I did somehow make the red version of the hairpin, so I shouldn’t complain, but the magenta hairpin is really magical to me. Having said that, the novel does say that the hairpin is made of a red crystal, so yeah, S2 hairpin is more faithful. On that note, Ōdanna-sama’s eyes are also red now instead of magenta… and that’s faithful to the novel too. Unfortunately, I am also accustomed to his magenta S1 eyes, so it takes a while to get used to.

Other than that, hey, we have Season Two! The background arts are very Japanese, and they truly went into the details for those, so it’s good.

Now let’s start unpacking (I hate that word but I am using it…) the scenes one by one.

The first scene is Ōdanna-sama pledging to Aoi that she will be his wife. That is from Vol 6 Ch 9, where just before this scene we should have a scene where Ōdanna-sama lightly kissed Aoi on the lips. Yay!

The second scene is Ōdanna-sama walking away towards the sunset, but he is smiling. Since Vol 6 Ch 9 happens at night, I don't think this is the same scene. The voice-over was Aoi’s voice, saying she wants to know more about Ōdanna-sama, but she knows very little of him. Then we have Kasuga asking if Aoi is going to marry Ōdanna-sama, and Aoi denied outright, but the latter is blushing this time. That would be Vol 6, one of the intermissions.

Then we have the scene of Ōdanna-sama enjoying dinner at the Moonflower, and again it’s from Vol 6 Ch 9. This is where he will give Aoi an obsidian key, the key that is… well, key to understanding his past.

Then we have another Vol 6 scene of a fountain which shows a Western-style house, but that house is nowhere to be seen around. In the novel Vol 6 Ch 8, Ōdanna-sama is showing Aoi this fountain, which is in his vegetable garden.

Then we have Takechiyo-sama, the young prince of the Imperial Family, looking down on Yōto streets. I think this is from Vol 7 Ch 3 where Aoi took him for shopping for ingredients. Then Aoi preparing some meals, then we have O-Ryō, Ginji-san and Chibi eating Aoi’s food. Since they were still relaxed, it might have been just Vol 6 before Ōdanna-sama’s disappearance. Then Takechiyo was enjoying meals with Aoi and Ritsuko-san… might be Vol 7 Ch 3.

Then on 0:55”, Aoi was asking Ginji about Ōdanna-sama, and Ginji replied that they lost contact with him. That would be Vol 6 Ch 10… which segued into Raijū’s entrance to Tenjin-ya, declaring that Ōdanna-sama will not be coming back (Vol 6 Ch 10).

Then the music changes to End Credit (Namida no Reshipi, the Recipe for Tears), and we are looking at the Northwestern Land clock in the snow (Vol 9 Ch 2). Cue shots of winter land, which would be Vol 8 where Aoi was exploring the Northern Land in search for ways to help Ōdanna-sama. Then Ginji and another ayakashi went down into the ground – I feel this is where Ginji was taking Aoi into the underground in Vol 10 (possibly Ch 4) to rescue Ōdanna-sama.

At 1:13”, we see Byakuya giving a pep-talk to the Tenjin-ya staff; that would be Vol 7 Ch 1 (or could be later in the same volume). Then we have Aoi and Ginji distributing temari-zushi in Vol 7 Ch 5, but with Raijū’s voiceover, saying that Ōdanna-sama is an ayakashi whose existence is forbidden in Kakuriyo.

Then we have a very important scene where the very young Ōdanna-sama is jailed (for being a jyaki), side by side with the young Aoi getting hungry. That would be from Vol 9 Ch 7

Young Setsu and young Aoi... suffering...

Then we have Ōdanna-sama admitting that he was scared of telling Aoi about who he really is because he is afraid that Aoi would hate him (might be from Vol 6 Ch 9 because he didn't say that he was a jyaki yet). Cue Aoi saying to herself how she wasn’t expecting how much she wants to see Ōdanna-sama again (Vol 8 I guess), and the scene is Aoi talking to Ōdanna-sama in his farmer suit (Vol 6 Ch 8).

Then we return to the first scene where Ōdanna-sama is walking away from Aoi into the night, looking very sad and lonely. He said that because he is – after all – an oni, he doesn’t want Aoi to get to know him.

The trailer ends with Aoi screaming, calling for Ōdanna-sama. I think this one would be from Vol 9 Ch 7 when she finally sees Ōdanna-sama’s past, and Ōdanna-sama left a note, releasing her from her obligation to marry him. Or, this scream is from the end of Vol 9 Ch 6 where Ōdanna-sama was taken away by Kurogai Shogun's troops.

Overall, I think this is really a wonderful trailer that sums up the tribulations that Aoi, Ōdanna-sama and our Tenjin-ya friends are facing in Vols 6-10. I think I will cry when I see Ōdanna-sama’s past in S2…

Overall, despite the changes in the anime style, I am looking forward to Season Two next week. I hope you are too! I will write episodic impressions, though I won’t be able to do that in time for Ep 2 because I will be traveling.

Talk to you soon!

Edit 17 Oct 2025:

After considering how fast Eps 1-3 move (we're already at Vol 6 Ch 9 in Ep 3), I think we only have one cour for Season Two, which ends with Vol 10. That is unfortunate. However, since the trailer and opening theme only show scenes up to Vol 8, I still think that we will have a second opening theme for the second half of this cour.

That being said, IMO the end of the trailer with Aoi screaming, calling for Ōdanna-sama would now be from Vol 7 Ch 4 where she saw Ōdanna-sama's shadow jyaki figure. That would explain how Aoi (wearing the blue grey kimono with haori of the same colour) opened a door with the Obsidian Key. The kimono-haori set was the same one she wore with Ritsuko-san and Takechiyo-sama, thus would be from Vol 7 Ch 3. The first door she opened with the Obsidian Key would be the door she found when she followed Ōgondōji-sama's golden dusts (after Aoi and Sasuke-kun shopped for macaroon ingredients). The door would lead to a cemetery (where the body of Byakuya's wife Suzume was interred), and in that cemetery, Aoi would meet Ōdanna-sama's shadow jyaki figure. Ōdanna-sama didn't want to see Aoi in that form, hence he disappeared on her while Aoi was screaming, asking him to show himself, for she wanted to see him no matter how he looked.

Ōgondōji-sama would later repaired Ōdanna-sama's artificial heart, hence the latter was unconscious for about a month (practically during most of Volume 8). The Master woke up at the Northwestern Land at the end of Vol 8 when Ōgondōji-sama was about to bring Aoi to see him.

Thanks, Anon! Yeah, I hope we can get used to the animation style... especially because of the powerhouse voice actors we have. It's just, Ōdanna-sama looks much more majestic in S1 when drawn correctly... but fingers crossed that S2 generally gets it right!

I watched the first episode yesterday. I enjoyed having it back again but the animation style is different. I thought Aoi looked younger here. Odanna also looked younger. He seems to be missing his regal commanding manner. He had that in season one even when he was pretending to be others.

Terri, you read my mind. I miss S1 Ōdanna-sama with his majestic, regal, commanding manner. I am grateful for S2, but changing the animation style is a mistake I think. I hope I feel better after viewing more episodes, but right now, I really miss Ōdanna’s S1 manners and even the curls on his hair. And what’s with the almost-kiss flashback?! How come they messed up with the animation for that one?! Gosh! I need to take another look at S2E1 before writing my thoughts, cos otherwise I will just complain about the animation…

Thank you for the translations you have given over the years. Great news, the 13th novel will be published soon! As it says on the kadokawa website. It will be about the trip to the human world with the employees. We are being fed by the Kakuriyo gods.🙏

I totally agree with you on the new animation - I loved the way Ōdanna-sama and Ginji looked in season 1. However, as with the major animation changes that happened with Apothecary Diaries, I'll deal with it, because I'm SOOO happy we have a new season! And thank you so much for your hard work translating/summarizing -- with everything else you have going on in your life. Your insights are wonderful and make reading the light novels even more enjoyable!

Thanks a lot for the comments, guys! Anon 2, OMG, I didn't realise that Apothecary Diaries animation changed! It still looks better than Kakuriyo 2 though, so I hope you're okay with it?

I will post my review of Ep 1 in 24 hrs or so. I am annoyed by how the new animation messed up with the almost-kiss in S1E20, so I need to rewatch Ep 1 so that I am in a more positive vibe...

But then again, we have S2, so yay!
