Season Two episode predictions

At least Kakuriyo is promoted at the Crunchyroll main banner during the first half of the week!

Because how fast Season Two is cruising now, it’s clear now we will only have one cour (but I hope we will have two opening themes to set the tone for the latter half of the cour). Thus we only have a maximum of nine more episodes if we are going with 13 episodes. If we’re going with 12 episodes, then we only have eight more episodes… Thus, I thought it’s useful to predict the arrangement of the remaining episodes for Season Two so that we can at least hope for some congruent storyline. Again, this is just my prediction, and I may totally be wrong. I am assuming we will have only 12 episodes in total, because this production team skimps so much.

Below is my educated guess on the remaining Season Two episodes. Use it just as a guidance, please.

Ep 5: Aoi feeding Takechiyo-sama, Aoi and Sasuke-kun shopping for macaroon ingredient at downtown Yōto, and Aoi was spirited away to the ancient cemetery where she met Ōdanna-sama in his shadowy jyaki form (Vol 7 Ch 3 and Ch 4). If they squeeze the storyline further, Aoi would be attacked by Raijū again here at the cemetery, but Byakuya and Sasuke-kun would rescue her. Byakuya would spirit (or teleport) himself, Sasuke-kun and Aoi to Shimon’s place (Shimon is Dr Saraku’s older brother). Byakuya might tell Aoi here that Tenjin-ya without the incumbent Ōdanna-sama is not the Tenjin-ya he wants to dedicate his life to. Skipping the whole conversation with Shimon over dandelion tea (unlike in the novel), Sasuke-kun and Aoi would directly return to Tenjin-ya. I still hope to see Aoi’s surprise as she saw her own hairpin (on how it glows and blooms more and more) (Vol 7 Ch 4).

Edit 30 Oct'25: Ep 5 ends with Raijū tapping Aoi's shoulder to her surprise (and we get to see Ōdanna-sama's astral form instead of jyaki form). I'm glad that Byakuya is appearing in Ep 6 then instead of Ep 5. We might get 13 episodes then if we're lucky...

Ep 6: After returning to Tenjin-ya, Aoi decides to feed the rest of Tenjin-ya crew with some temarizushi. Ginji, Ai-chan and Chibi would help her. This is where Aoi realises that she does have an important role to do because you cannot really wage a war against the tyrants without a full stomach. However, since this Vol 7 Ch 5 story can only fill 1-2 minutes of the current anime speed, I think Vol 7 Ch 6 will come next. However, beforehand, I hope we will have Ginji staring at his hand for a few seconds as he stops short of caressing Aoi’s hair. I think Ep 6 will thus have Aoi making macaroons for Takechiyo and Hatori visiting Seikamaru to eat some borsch soup and to tell Aoi about Zakuro. I hope we’ll get a shot of how Aoi is jealous or at least insecure about Zakuro being a former close ally of Ōdanna-sama. IMO, Aoi will visit the Nui-no-in Mansion again, where she learned that Takechiyo-sama has been whisked back to the Palace, by the order of the King. Byakuya would secretly appear and concoct a plan to infiltrate the Palace with Aoi and Sasuke-kun.

Edit 6 Nov'25: Ep 6 started from the point when Raijū attacked Aoi. Then Byakuya and Sasuke rescued Aoi, Byakuya teleported Aoi and Sasuke (and himself) to Shimon's shop, and then Byakuya narrated  Ōdanna-sama's past. Then Aoi and Sasuke-kun went back at Tenjin-ya and Aoi made temari-zushi for everyone. The episode ended with a big revelation of Ginji's feelings to Aoi and his internal resolution to continue loving and supporting Aoi, despite her apparent growing love to Ōdanna-sama...

Ep 7: this is a blank spot for me because I haven’t finished translating Vol 7 Ch 7. I have started translating it though, partly because I am annoyed at the numerous details we lost due to S2 speed. However, this is where the Three Musketeers (Byakuya, Aoi and Sasuke-kun) will infiltrate the Palace. I originally thought that they were going to search for Ōdanna-sama, but after translating Vol 7 Ch 4, I realised that Aoi and Byakuya would realise by then that Ōdanna-sama was not in the dungeon anymore. So, the Three Musketeers actually sneaked into the Palace for Aoi to meet Takechiyo and for Byakuya to air some grievance to the King. This episode might be where we’ll see the King (whom most of us would have guessed as the purple-haired ayakashi who ate hamburger at the Nighthawk). I do hope that we’ll get some flashback of Byakuya’s life with his Muromachi wife Suzume. The Kakuriyo public might learn of Ōdanna-sama being a jyaki here. The episode might end with Aoi deciding to visit the Northern Land.

Ep 8: we may just have the entire Vol 8 squeezed here. That includes Aoi meeting up with Kasuga, her husband Kiyo-dono, and some dudes in the Northern Land. I haven’t translated Vol 8 as you know, so I have very little idea of what happens there. It might end with either Aoi embarking on the Bunmon airship with Ōgondōji-sama to see Ōdanna-sama… or with Ōdanna-sama himself waking up in Ōgondōji-sama’s villa, reading some newspapers that vilify him for being a jyaki.

Ep 9: I really hope we at least have two episodes (Episodes 9-10) for Volume 9, because it contains a lot of Ōdanna-sama’s backstory (please please please). If this scenario happens, then we have the first half of novel Volume 9 here in Episode 9. It might end with Ōdanna-sama telling Aoi that the thing she ate during the Kind Ayakashi (the Ginji-version) visit was Ōdanna-sama’s own psychic core (i.e., his own psychic heart)… because it’s quite a cliff-hanger.

Ep 10: this episode might be about Ōdanna-sama being recaptured by Kurogai Shogun and his troops. We hopefully will see Aoi crying out as Ōdanna-sama being taken away, but not without him cryptically saying what his favourite food was. Then we would see Ōgondōji-sama’s appearance, telling Aoi to find the truth behind some closed doors. We should also see Aoi preparing the meals for Ōdanna-sama for, like, one second, before she goes back to Yōto with Dr Saraku, O-Ryō, Akatsuki, Chibi and Ai-chan. I hope we’ll see Dr Saraku’s weird rocket here!

Ep 11: assuming we’re on 12 episodes, this should be where Aoi rescued Ōdanna-sama and gave him a square kiss with the tongue (Vol 10 Ch 5). I hope, really hope, that we’ll have one full episode of this rescue. I hope we will get to see Shirō’s psychic form guiding Aoi towards the dungeon at the start of the episode. However, it seems we will have Vol 10 Chapters 1-4 squeezed into the first few minutes (because those chapters contain the plan on infiltrating the underground dungeon to rescue Ōdanna-sama). If they want a cliff-hanger, they might end the episode with Ōdanna-sama and Aoi arriving at the Hachiyō Night Meeting in the nick of time.

Ep 12: we might be ending this season with Vol 10 Ch 6 where our team defeated Raijū, Ōdanna-sama’s position being reinstated, and Ōdanna-sama properly proposed to Aoi (though the girl beat him first in Vol 10 Ch 5). I really hope there’s a jump of three years to allow Aoi to finish her undergraduate degree (I always think it’s so nice and very josei^ – instead of shōjō – for Yuma Midori-sensei to include this bit), and Setsu (yes, Ōdanna-sama’s real name is Setsu, y’all!) picking up Aoi as she graduated.

As I said: not a fan of the speed, but I do admit that two full novel volumes without Ōdanna-sama is a lonely affair. Hence, I will just take it as it is and see the silver linings.

However, I cannot make excuses for the bad animation, for it has steered some very loyal fans away from Season Two, unfortunately… (but I totally understand them).

I hope if somehow magically S2 is well accepted (despite the whole animation hiccup), Gonzo and Makaria will release the splice-of-life series containing Volumes 11-13 and little tidbits left behind (like, Aoi- Ōdanna-sama’s orchard date in Vol 6 Ch 1-3).

Or shall we have Kadokawa Studio taking over that splice-of-life series? It’s not unheard of for a series to be taken over by another studio… and if Kadokawa is taking over it, it makes sense, because Kakuriyo is an IP of Kadokawa…

At least, have the Kadokawa Studio handles the animation part of it; they'd know what to do!

My apologies Gonzo and Makaria, but, for us, Kakuriyo is a very important work, and cutting back on animation budget does no fan service here for the loyal fans… please understand that. So, please take this work seriously. Do not list producers and animation teams who have very little grasp of Japanese culture and also bad at drawing characters. It does nothing good to the series.

I do feel bad writing this because the Kakuriyo anime Twitter – ehm, x – account has been very faithful to promote the series. I think the bad decision lies squarely at the executives.

Footnote:

^Just on josei vs shōjō: the former is the genre for more mature women (say, women post-high school), while the latter is for younger girls (say, up to high school). With all due respect to high-schoolers (because I was one of them once a long long time ago)… and not to say that there are no high schoolers who love Kakuriyo… but you can see how Kakuriyo is different from the generic high school anime. For one, the heroine is not in a hurry to fall in love, and when they do fall in love, it was done in a grown-up (or at least realistic) way. The way Kakuriyo sees jobs and other societal issues (like injustice towards the native inhabitants of Kakuriyo) is also very josei.

To throw more examples, “With You and the Rain” is also a josei anime, though it doesn’t have amorous love there. Interestingly, although “Kono Oto wo Tomare” is set in high school, the way Kudo and Satowa fell in love was the slow burn that is typical of josei genre. I would put Horimiya in the mixture of shōjō-josei category for the way they realistically portray love relationships, despite it being set in high school.

Oni-fan here, I can only hope for the last episode to be as you have written and then some more! Because it would be so cute to see Setsu picking up Aoi when she graduates! :))))

"As I said: not a fan of the speed, but I do admit that two full novel volumes without Ōdanna-sama is a lonely affair. Hence, I will just take it as it is and see the silver linings."
Yepppp

Yes and yes, we can only hope this performs well and we can get some delicious snippets of all the other volumes and scenes missed out in this season, or even a do-over with better animation quality! :) But even if it doesn't, I'm still grateful :D

Thank you for these predictions. I feel like few fans already stopped watching S2.
I really want 26 ep like S1. Idc if I'm being greedy i want most of the details in novel to be animated. At these times I wish I was rich and drop extra budget on animators head

Oni-fan, thank you very much for your thoughts and positive disposition! I truly appreciate you!

I am swaying between being grateful and annoyed because of the animation, but I do agree that your sunny disposition is better than always getting annoyed at the animation. I think I just have to be grateful but at the same time objectively (as possible) voice my suggestions for future improvements.

And yes, I agree, I am hoping for a scene where Setsu is picking up Aoi after graduation. Better, that he is present during the graduation, complete with a gorgeous suit!

Thank you so much, Anon, for your comment. No, you're not greedy. I think 26 episodes for S2 does the novel much more justice. I also wish that I am so rich that I could've just financed most of the animation production! Huh, if the studio delays the production for another year to get more funding for animation, in hindsight I would understand...

And yeah, I saw x posts about fans who decided to stop watching S2. I cannot blame them. At the same time, I remind myself that the anime (while very important) is not the original work. As long as there's enough people who love this work and pick the novel (for Japanese) or manga (for all), we will have enough fan-base to ask for a reboot in a decade (hahaha), or at least a splice-of-life like Horimiya S2 - MUCH BETTER ANIMATED this time!

LMAO I agree, I actually have like fantasies of being rich enough to just drop all that money in the animes/mangas I like and get them to animate it well >:) Glad to see that I'm not alone in that haha

Thanks! Oh yeah we can dream alright, and Setsu gets admired by girls in the human realm lmao - Oni-fan (forgot to sign off on the other comment ops)
Icha said…
Oh yeah, you’re not alone, hahaha! I truly hope that we can save this work, cos it’s such a shame if such a lovely story is drowned by some bad animation!
Icha said…
Oni-fan, OMG, it would be so cool to see normal Utsushiyo girls fangirling Setsu, and the gorgeous oni in disguise blushes or ignores them in his cool demeanour, particularly because he only really sees Aoi and just Aoi! I’d love to see Setsu in a suit choosing a bottle of wine for Ginji as well!

ദ്ദി ( ≧ᗜ≦) - Oni-fan

This could literally be my reaction to Aoi because her bf is so cute/cool/hot in the apparent realm, she's going to hide herself in embarrassment or shyness idk LOL #oneofthem okay I'm joking, wouldn't do this irl HAHA
Icha said…
Hahaha!!! TBH I might be fangirling big time if I see Setsu in suit! Aoi should be super jealous with the attention that her fiancée gets, but in the novel, she actually was “just” pondering how gorgeous he really is, and she agrees with the girls lol!!

Ahh... classic Aoi... love her honesty >3 what a mood -Oni-fan
Icha said…
LOL! So true! That's so Aoi, such that even Aoi herself admits that she often shot herself in the foot with this habit of hers! She did say to herself how gorgeous Setsu is several times (like when they were running away from Kurogai Shogun in Vol 9 Ch 6 and when Setsu in suit picked her up after graduation in Vol 10 Ch 10), but she eventually told him how he looked gorgeous in Vol 10 Ch 10!

I haven't translated Vol 10 Ch 10, but I wrote the summary here:
https://kakuriyo-yadomeshi.blogspot.com/2021/12/updates-and-recap-of-rest-of-volume-10.html

would love to translate it one day...

Yooo I was totally trying to find that summary haha thanks for the link! Yeah they're so cute together :) Loved the summary btw (can't wait to see it animated!!)

Hahaha! No worries, Oni-fan! Btw, you can sign in as a user, I guess? But you need to use a Google account (like gmail), which may be a bit cumbersome? Glad you love the summary of the rest of Vol 10!

Heya! I didn't know where the best place to leave a comment would be, so I decided your most recent post would be the best place, haha.

I just wanted to say, thank you so so much! I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you've translated parts of Kakuriyo for us. I'd been so gutted about the light novels not being in English, and having been left to wonder about Ōdanna-sama and Aoi’s fate, your blog was a real bit of light in the dark. I honestly just can’t get to grips with how this story hasn't been localized yet, but I’m crossing my fingers that at some point (maybe with the help of the albeit badly animated second season…) it gets out there more. It’s that or I’m starting a petition or finally learning Japanese in earnest because I’m obsessed, dear lord OTL

But yeah! Just wanted to voice my appreciation, thank you for your work <3
Icha said…
Hi Gato, thank you so much for your lovely comment! Glad that you found this blog!

Yeah, since I have no forum feature in this blog, readers just have to leave comments wherever they can. I always pick them up, and always try to respond within 24 hours (workload permitted, haha!). Anyway, yeah, fans have been emailing Kadokawa and English publishers to ask for the formal translation of the light novel. That would be amazing if it happens. Other works have been translated as well, why not this one! If you can start a petition to have it translated, yeah please do! I will sign it as well!
Gato said…
Of course! As I said, I felt I needed to say something somewhere to give my thanks :)

Yes, count me as one of those fans, because I recently emailed Kadokawa about the English translation - they were nice enough to reply, but only said that it’s currently unclear whether an English version will be published. It feels bad to be a pain in their side, but maybe if they get enough emails from us, they might start thinking it’s a good idea, lol. As for the petition, I’m giving it some serious thought, so if I get to figuring it out I'll make sure to let you know!
Icha said…
Hi Gato, sorry for the late reply! Thanks a lot for the thoughts on the petition. I think the response from Kadokawa can be interpreted both ways (as with many Japanese responses haha!), but it might be that they’re still considering whether to do the translation or not. Can you post here their exact words, even in Japanese? We might be able to decode it together. Thanks a lot!
Gato said…
Hey Icha, absolutely no worries at all! And that sounds like a good plan; I often don't trust Google Translate 😅 I'll copy-paste their response here:

KADOKAWA カスタマーサポートです。
いつも弊社書籍をご愛読いただき、誠にありがとうございます。

お問い合わせいただいた『かくりよの宿飯』(富士見L文庫)の件ですが、現在のところ、英語版の刊行は未定となっております。
恐れ入りますが、何卒ご了承のほどお願い申し上げます。

今後とも弊社製品をご愛顧くださいますよう、よろしくお願い申し上げます。

I'm honestly surprised they replied, but having seen that other fans on Reddit had emailed them before and had got a reply, it was worth a shot. I'm curious to know if you see anything different in their email; thanks in return! 🙏
Icha said…
Gato, thanks a lot for the email from Kadokawa! Now, the email is very flowery, but the essence is this one: 刊行は未定となっております。
刊行 is “publication”, 未定 is “undecided”.

It might be the way they say “there’s no plan for publication or translation to English now”, but we can also see it as “as of now, it’s still undecided whether we will have it translated to English nor not.” The nuance is a bit different. I think it depends on whether Season Two is well-accepted or not… and if yes, they might consider it a shot…

What do you think?
Gato said…
If they’re using the word “undecided” I’d like to think that they’re leaving it as a possibility. Then again, it could just be niceties 😅 I agree that it feels like it’ll boil down to Season 2’s performance - it’s a big opportunity to make them consider translating it.

Although I can’t help think that Season 1 should’ve been enough of a push since I feel it was well-received, though I’m not sure since I watched it years after it aired… and in my experience I’ll think something is popular until I see the sort of response series like The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren get (which is well-deserved, no complaints there!). But it puts things into perspective.

Having said all that, it’s why I feel like more noise needs to be made. Never hurts to try that petition, I just gotta put my head down and sort it out, haha.

On a completely different note, do you happen to know where to find the instrumental OST of S1? I thought I’d ask because I’m only finding the album where the OP/ED songs are, but I’d love to hear what’s playing in the background. If not, no worries!! Not trying to put stuff on your plate, but if you happen to know, I’d appreciate the info! Digging around, I only know that Takurō Iga is a/the composer, but my digging skills aren’t enough after that lol.
Icha said…
Hahaha! Yeah, it could be just niceties (which I would expect from a Japanese company, with all due respect, of course). However, I also would like to think of it as a possibility, tied to the S2 performance.

The thing with S1 is because at that time, in 2018, the novel was not finished yet. Vol 10 was published on 10 Aug 2019, well after the novel was finished. The Japanese readers (and other readers who can read Japanese like those from Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and China) would know what happened by Vol 9, that Ōdanna-sama was not the bad guy etc, that he sacrificed himself big time to save Aoi's life etc. However, internationally, this info was not readily available, and some viewers were confused as to why the series ended in an uncertainty. Many didn't realise that the anime aired in 2018 contained Vol 1-5 of the novel. Of course many viewers also saw through Ōdanna-sama's facade and saw a very kind oni there, but it was quite a polarising view back then...

Only then when Fan Translator By Choice started to translate Vol 6 that readers realised there really was something more to Ōdanna-sama than just an oni who kidnapped Aoi. Then I picked up the translation and we realised that he really sacrificed himself etc etc.

But those things happened after S1 finished (and we didn't even know that there was a continuation back then). So, yes, S1 was quite well-received, but not as rounded as - say - Apothecary Diaries, partly because there was no English novel (or even manga) that preceded the anime to give international readers background knowledge.

So now with most of us knowing what actually happened in Aoi's past, we are more ready for a S2, hence it happened. I do think it's time to make more noise to kindly request for the English translation now.

It does hinge on the animation as well, because S2E1-E3 had some really bad animation scenes... particularly the pumpkin croquette scene, God, don't remind me about that... but fingers crossed the animation is getting better and S2 is well-received overall.

Sorry for the long response, haha!

As for the instrumental, I don't know yet... I have Tōyama Nao's album for Kakuriyo in my iPhone, but only the first two songs are available right now. Try Flying Dog's x account? It's the studio that helps with the music.

Thanks again, so nice chatting with you! (and with other readers, of course!)
